The gunfight took place at Kamalla in Chouddagram Upazila late Tuesday night, said Major Ataur Rahman, company commander of RAB-11.

The man has been identified as Faruk, 35, from Ramra village in Chouddagram. He was named in five drug cases, said Inspector (Investigation) Subal Ranjan Chakma of Chouddagram Police Station.

Being tipped off, a RAB team conducted a drive to retrieve drugs in Kamalla, said Major Ataur.

“Drug trader Faruk and his accomplices opened fire on RAB officials and RAB retaliated in self-defence.”

Faruk who was shot in the gunfire died on his way to the hospital.

Faruk appeared on the list of ‘top drug traders’ prepared by the home ministry, said Major Ataur.

Police recovered yaba pills and a loaded pistol from the scene.
