Information Minister Inu bins UN, US statements on attacks on student protesters

Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu has trashed the statements from the US Embassy and the United Nations overt attacks on student protesters demanding safe roads.

Inu described the statements as “unwarranted” and “undesirable”.

“There was no suppression and oppression or attack on children. Sporadic clashes took place in two or three places in Dhaka and police tried to control the troubles,” said Inu in a news briefing at his office in Dhaka on Tuesday. 

Students demanding safe roads clashed with the police in Dhanmondi on Sunday.

“We think the US Embassy's statement in such a situation is very unfortunate.”

The minister said the students checked vehicles to detect irregularities and law-enforcement agencies guarded them. The prime minister accepted their demands and took immediate steps, he said.

“A vested quarter is engaged in misdirecting the student movement.”

Inu said the real picture of Dhaka has not been reflected in the statements.

“The statement shows the US Embassy is trying to poke its nose into the internal politics of Bangladesh. It is very sad.”

“Statements issued by the UN and the US embassy are not true,” Inu said.

The minister asked the US Embassy and the UN to retract the statements.
