Two more die in anti-drug raids in Mymensingh, Kushtia

Two more people—one in Mymensingh and one in Kushtia—have been killed in gunfights involving security forces amid the ongoing drug crackdown across the country.

Both of them were involved in drug trafficking and named in several anti-narcotic cases, according to the police.

‘Drug traffickers’ have been reportedly killed in ‘shootouts’ nearly every night since security forces launched an anti-drug campaign in May.

About 200 people have been killed in similar incidents since the start of the crackdown.

MYMENSINGH

A man has been killed in an alleged shootout with police at Sadar Upazila’s Shambhuganj area in Mymensingh. He has been identified as Noman, 40, a resident of Senbari area in the district town.

He was named in at least 14 cases at the Kotwali Police Station, which mainly included drug trafficking charges, said OC Mahmudul Islam.

Police conducted a raid at Shambhuganj’s Ghurampur village around 1:45am on Monday after receiving information that drug dealers were dividing up their shares in the area, he said.

“The drug dealers noticed the police presence and opened fire and fled when police retaliated. Noman was found shot after the gunfight.”

He was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the OC said.

Two police personnel were hurt in the incident and received first aid, he added.

Some drugs were also recovered on the spot, police said.

KUSHTIA

A drug suspect has been killed in an alleged shootout with police in Kushtia.

The deceased has been identified as Sahar Ali, 38, resident of the district’s Purba Majampur area.

He was named in 12 cases that involve drug trafficking and other crimes, said Kushtia Model Police Station OC Nasir Uddin.

The gunfight occurred under the Sheikh Russel Kushtia-Haripur intersection bridge around 4am on Monday, he said.

Police conducted a raid after receiving reports that criminals were dealing drugs in the area, he said.

“The drug peddlers opened fire as soon as police arrived in the area. Police returned fire. At the end of the gunfight, one person was found shot.”

He was taken to Kushtia General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the OC said.

Police later identified him as Sahar Ali, a drug trafficker, he said.

Five police personnel were also hurt in the gunfight. A shotgun, three bullets and six yaba pills were recovered from the scene, he added.
