‘Amit’, 20, from Babu Bazar in old Dhaka died after falling from the sixth floor, the police believe.

His body was found near the escalator on the ground floor while his mobile phone, sandals and eyeglasses were found on the sixth floor on Tuesday, said Abu Tayab Md Arif, an assistant commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

The Star Cineplex on the seventh floor was open as usual.

“We believe he died after falling from the sixth floor as his belongings were there. His father identified him when we contacted him on his number found on the mobile phone,” Arif said.

The security guard on duty on the ground floor found Amit after hearing a thud around 11am, the shopping mall’s security chief Shahabuddin Chaklader told bdnews24.com.

“We saw no sign of life in the body when we came. Blood was coming out from the upper side of the body. Later police came in,” Shahabuddin said.

Amit’s father suspects it was a murder.

The father told the police that Amit, who worked a pharmacy at Mitford Hospital area, left home for the shop with his lunch as usual.

“His father told us that his son had no reason to die by suicide and that someone had pushed his son to death,” said Arif, the DMP official,.

The law enforcers would explore all the possibilities during investigation, the police officer said.

The gate on the ground floor opens for the Cineplex customers at 9:30am and the first show starts after another hour, according to Bashundhara City security chief Shahabuddin.

There is not much barricade to enter the sixth floor from the seventh floor, he said.

“Security guards are deployed on all the floors, but they recce the floors on the move. So it is not difficult to enter the sixth floor without being noticed,” he added.

Police have asked for CCTV camera footage from the shopping mall authorities. “Everything will be clear once we get the footage,” Arif said.

The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
