Four missing trawler passengers found dead on Shitalakhya river

Narayanganj firemen have recovered the bodies of four people who went missing after falling off the rooftop of a trawler on the Shitalakhya river.

The bodies were recovered from the river along Tanbazar, Lobonghat and surrounding areas on Tuesday, said Deputy Assistant Director of Narayanganj Fire Service Md Mamunur Rashid.

The deceased Emon, 18, Dween Islam, 35, Anwar Hossain Salan, 35, and Jony, 23, hailed from Madanganj Islampur in Bandar Upazila.

The trawler overloaded with about 70 passengers tilted after it left Central Kheyaghat towards Madanganj Kheyaghat on Sunday night.

Several passengers fell into the river as the roof caved in, said Narayanganj Central Naval Police Station chief Newaz Uddin Ahmed.

Police and firemen launched the rescue effort overnight, which was later suspended as no passengers were initially reported missing.

The rescue operation resumed on Monday when relatives of three passengers reported them missing.

The rescue operation will continue into Tuesday evening.

The bodies have been kept on the river bank which will be handed over to the relatives following a legal procedure, said Additional Superintendent of Police Md Sharfuddin.
