The woman has been identified as

33-year-old Laily Begum, wife of Abul Kashem, a local businessman.

She was a resident of Ashulia’s Dendabor

Natunpara area.

Doctors and the staff of Momtaz Uddin General Hospital were on the run soon after the incident.

“The victim’s relatives reported her death caused by the wrong treatment to police. Later the police rushed there and saw a chaotic

situation. However, police brought the situation under control,” said Abdul

Awal, chief of the Ashulia Police Station.

The victim’s husbanded Abul Kashem claimed

that nose, ear and throat specialist Moddassir Mahmud of the hospital advised his

wife to undergo an immediate operation as she has been suffering from tonsil

infection.

“The operation began in the evening. After

two hours, we became worried as they did not take the patient out of the operating theatre. But the doctor snubbed us and told us to wait. Sometime later, Moddassir said

the condition of the patient was not good and asked us to take her to Dhaka

instantly.”

Kashem said they found her dead after they forced their way into the operating theatre.

The hospital authority fled when relatives

and local people burst into anger.

“We are investigating the incident,” said Amzadul Haque, Savar Upazila health and family planning officer.

Hospital authorities could not be reached

for comment.
