Police arrest three with links to Rangamati killings

Police have arrested three men with suspected links to the murders of six people, including Shaktiman Chakma, chairman of Rangamati’s Naniarchar Upazila.

Following the information of intelligence, police raided EPZ and Bayazid areas in Chattogarm around 2:30am on Tuesday and arrested them, said Rangamati DB Police Sub-Inspector Ahsanuzzaman.

All of the arrestees are the leaders of a unit of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front or UPDF. 

Two of them are 35-year-old Kantamoy Chakma, president of Ganatantrik Jubo Forum of Chattogram metropolitan unit and 40-year-old Sukrity Chakma, general secretary of the unit. They are the residents of Khagrachhari.

Another suspect is 25-year-old Ziko Chakma, general secretary of Pahari Chhatra Parishad Committee, another unit of UPDF in Chattogram and a resident of Naniarchar Union.

Shaktiman Chakma, also a leader of Khagrachhari’s Jana Sanghati Samiti (MN Larma), was shot dead on May 3.

Following the day, five people, including United People’s Democratic Front (Ganatantrik) leader Tapan Jyoti Chakma, were killed in a gun attack on the road to the funeral of Shaktiman.
