Muhammad Samad appointed Dhaka University Pro-Vice-Chancellor

Poet and Institute of Social Welfare and Research Professor Dr Muhammad Samad has been appointed as Dhaka University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

President Md Abdul Hamid, the chancellor of all universities in Bangladesh, appointed Samad for the next four years, the government said in a circular on Sunday.

Prof Samad, the president of Jatiya Kabita Parishad or National Poetry Council, served as the vice-chancellor of the University of Information Technology and Sciences or UITS prior to his appointment as Dhaka University pro-VC.

Born in Jamalpur in 1956, he was a visiting professor at Winona State University in Minnesota.

He completed a comparative research study on higher education in social work at universities in Bangladesh and the US as a fellow of the Catherine A Kendall Institute of International Social Work Education, one of the most important social welfare organisations in the world.

Prof Samad has published several collections of poetry, including ‘Ekjan Rajnaitik Netar Manifesto’, ‘Aami Noi Indrajit Megher Araley’, ‘Porabey Chandan Kath’, ‘Cholo, Tumul Brishtitey Bhiji’, ‘Sharater Akashey Purnima’ and ‘Premer Kabita’.

He is the recipient of many prestigious awards for his contributions to Bangla literature.
