The shootout took place at the upazila’s Kalapara intersection on Friday night, said Kamrul Islam, chief of the Nandail Police Station.

The deceased has been identified as 19-year-old Emon, a resident of the upazila’s Bonura village.

Emon was arrested in a case over the murder of 15-year-old autorickshaw driver Rana in the upazila’s Borhail village on Thursday, OC Islam said. The criminals stole his autorickshaw after killing him.

“Police had taken Emon along with them in an operation to arrest another suspect Pranto, 22, when their accomplices opened fire on them. Emon fled during the gunfight and was struck by a bullet and fell. He was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.”

Emon was accused in several cases, the OC said.

Sub Inspector Nazim Uddin and Constable Mokter Hossain were also injured during the gunfight, he added.
