The shootout took place in Upazila’s Tantipara Ghat area around 2am on Friday, said Squadron Leader Syeed Abdullah Al Murad, chief of RAB-5 in Chapainawabganj.

The man could not be identified yet. The body was taken to the Sadar Hospital for autopsy, according to RAB.

As part of its regular drive against the contraband drugs, a team of RAB-5 raided the area. Sensing their presence, the criminals opened fire on RAB, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, Murad said.

During the gun battle, one of the criminals died on the spot while the others managed to flee. Five RAB members were also injured during the fight.

Two pistols, five bullets, two magazines and 6.5kg of cannabis were recovered from the scene.
