Three die after pickup van collides with bus in Sirajganj

Three passengers have been killed and as many others injured after a pickup van collided head-on with a bus in Sirajganj’s Tarash Upazila.

The accident took place on the Hatikumrul-Bonpara road in Khalkhula area around 9am on Thursday, said Abdul Quader Jilani, chief of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station.

The dead have been identified as 45-year-old Gupindranath Sarker, a lecturer of Shahjadpur Women’s College, 28-year-old Sohag and 40-year-old Renuka Khatun.

Sarkar was a resident of Bhangura Upazila’s Karotkandi village of Pabna and son of Rabindranath Sarkar, and Sohag was a resident of Magura Binod Union’s Ghargram village and son of Dulal Ahmed. 

Renuka, wife of Abdul Mannan Mandal, came from Ambaria village.

The injured were taken to the Sirajganj Sadar Hospital. Their identities could not be known immediately.   

Magura Binod Union Chairman Atiqul Islam Bulbul said a pickup van was heading to Hatikumrul from Tarash and collided head-on with a Mamun Paribahan bus coming from the opposite direction.

Two people died on the spot and a third died in hospital.

Police arrested the driver and his assistant, and seized the bus, Quader said.
