Two women hacked to death in Habiganj

Two women have been hacked to death in Habiganj’s Nabiganj Upazila.

The incident was reported from the upazila’s Sadullahpur village in Kurshi Union around 11pm on Sunday, said SM Ataur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Nabiganj Police Station.

The dead were identified as 50-year-old Mala Begum, the mother of expatriate Aklak Chowdhury and 22-year-old Rumi Begum, Aklak’s wife. 

Aklak has lived in the UK for some time. He married Rumi two years ago. Rumi lived in Aklak’s house with her mother-in-law. The collapsible gate of this house was locked, even during the day, the local residents said.

Around 11pm, the local residents heard someone screaming ‘fire!’ and immediately rushed to the house immediately, where they found the bodies of Rumi and Mala Begum.

Rumi and Mala were rushed to Nabiganj Upazila Medical Complex. On-duty doctors said the two died before arriving at the hospital.  

Habiganj Additional Superintendent of Police Asam Shamsul Islam and Circle SP Parvez Alam visited the scene after they were informed about the incident.

Nazrul Islam, the elder brother of Rumi, said he had regular contact with his sister.

On Sunday night Rumi told him to send some medicine for her eye infection. He sent a neighbour to the house with the medicine around 9pm. He received news of her death hours later.

One of the witnesses said a total four tea cups were seen laid out on the table while the two were being taken to the hospital. An initial investigation suggests the killers had been inside and took tea before the murders.

The relatives could not confirm whether anything had been stolen. Police recovered a shoe and a hand watch lay on the spot. They have yet to confirm the owners of the shoe and watch.

OC Ataur Rahman said the murders seemed pre-planned. Several deep injuries with sharp weapons have been found on the victims.

Police are searching for the criminals, he added.
