Three die as ambulance hits truck in Rangpur

Three people were killed after an ambulance rammed into a parked truck in Rangpur.

The accident took place on the Rangpur-Dinajpur Highway near Mohadebpur Chowrapara area in Sadar Upazila at around 11:30am on Thursday, said Inspector Abdur Razzak, chief of Taraganj Highway Police Station.

The dead were identified as 20-year-old Moni Begum, a pregnant woman and wife of Mosaddek Ajad, her aunt Afia Khatun, 50, and ambulance assistant Tusar, 18.

They all came from Biswanathpur village under Birampur Upazila in Dinajpur.

The ambulance was carrying Moni along with her three relatives to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

The ambulance struck a truck parked in the Chowrapara neighborhood, said Razzak citing witnesses. The truck was laden with utility poles.

Moni died on the spot while Afia and Tusar died hours after they were admitted to hospital, said Shafiqul Islam, assistant director of the hospital.

The driver critically injured in the accident was also admitted to the same hospital.

The ambulance and the truck were taken to the local police station.
