Robbery suspect dies in police ‘shootout’ in Cumilla

A man, who was named in several cases, has died in what law enforcers described as a shootout in Cumilla’s Muradnagar area.

Muradnagar Police OC AKM Manjur Alam said the ‘shootout’ took place on Muradnagar-Eliotganj road in Susunda area around 1:30am on Monday.

The deceased was identified as 35-year-old Alamin, a resident of the upazila’s Chaliakandi village.

Alam said Alamin was a member of an inter-city robber gang and named in nine cases at several police stations over different crimes, including robbery.

Alamin was active in robbing in multiple districts and highway routes for a long time, he said.

Police conducted an operation at Susunda area based on a tip that Alamin and his team had been preparing for a robbery, he added.

 “The robbers opened fire on, police forcing them to retaliate. At one point, others fled and Alamin was rescued injured. He was rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.”

The OC also said that three police personnel, including Sub-Inspector Gofran and constable Shamin were injured in the gunfight.

Ammunition, shotgun, machetes and sharps weapons were recovered from the scene, police said.
