Child loses arm as truck runs over her in Bogura

A child has lost its right arm after a truck run over her in Bogura in a chilling reminder of the two road accidents in Dhaka that have sent shock waves through the nation.

The incident took place in Dhaka-Rangpur Highway in Sherpur Upazila on Sunday.

The victim, identified as Shumi Begum, 8, a resident of Phultala Dokhinparha village of Shahbondegi Union and a first-grader at the local BRAC School.

Her mother Moriom Begum told journalists she and her daughter were returning home at noon from a nearby market. All of a sudden, Shumi tripped and fell to the ground and that was when a speeding truck ran over her arm.

Her two left fingers have also been severed alongside injuries on the head, face, and the rest of the body.

Locals rushed her to a nearby health care centre. After 4pm, she was transferred to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

Deputy Director of the hospital Dr Nirmalendu Chowdhury said the child is not out of danger. Her head injury is ‘serious’.

She is still unconsciousn and will be under observation for next 24 hours, the physician said.

A ward boy in the surgery department, Muktar Hosssain said she was given medicine free of cost.

Trainee Sub-Inspector Abdul Aziz Mandal of Chhilimpur Town Police Camp said she was admitted to hospital with critical injuries.

On Apr 3, third-year undergraduate student Rajib Hossain lost his right armto race between two buses in Dhaka's Bangla Motor. He died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Apr 17.

Khalid Hasan Hridoy, 19, lost his arm in a bus-truck collision on Dhaka-Khulna Highway in Gopalganj on Apr 17. The 10th grader has been undergoing treatment at DMCH since then in critical condition.

In yet another incident, Runi Akhter, a student of the University of Development Alternative in Dhaka's Dhanmondi, had her right leg crushed when a bus smashed it against the base of a pavement in the capital's Farmgate on Apr 12.

On Friday night, 18-year old Rozina Akhter fell under a double-decker bus of the BRTC in Dhaka’s Chairmanbarhi area and got her right leg severed from the thigh.

On Apr 16, Traffic Police Inspector Delwar Hossain’s left leg was crashed at Palashi by an oncoming  public administration ministry bus that was on the wrong lane. He is being treated at Square Hospital.
