The shootout took place in Chandanpur Union’s Hijaldi village around 2:30am on Sunday, said Biplab Kumar Nath, officer-in-charge of Kalaroa Police Station.

The man was identified as 26-year-old Sohag Sarker, a resident of Boalia village in Keragachi Union.

He was the prime suspect in a rape case filed on Saturday night with Kalaroa Police Station.

Sohag molested a third-grade student on Saturday noon, the OC said citing the case dossier. Police conducted an operation to arrest him immediately after the case was filed, he said.

“Police confronted a man in a field in Hijaldi village and he opened fire with a firearm. A gunfight ensued as police were forced to retaliate. He was found shot after the shootout.”

Police rushed him to Kalaroa Health Complex where duty-doctor Shafiqul Islam declared him dead.

Two assistant sub-inspectors, Ahsan and Sagar, were injured during the gunfight, he said.

A shotgun and ammunition were recovered from the scene, police said.
