The victim was identified as Hosne Ara Begum Manju, wife of Nurul Islam Fakir from Kalibari village in Dhansagar Union.

An initial investigation suggests the incident took place over the dispute with her son who lives in Dhaka, police say.

Manju was admitted to Sharankhola Upazila Medical Complex, said Md Kabirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sharankhola Police Station.

Fakir Mustofa Kamal, son of the victim Manju, is a retired army officer. He is now involved with clothing business in Dhaka, the OC said, citing the family.

“Manju was walking in the yard of her house on Friday evening when an armed man came inside, complaining about her son Kamal. He attacked her with a sharp weapon and cut off her leg above the knee. He fled afterwards.”

Her husband Nurul Islam rushed her to a local hospital after hearing her screams.

“Her left leg was cut off from the knee. Catastrophic bleeding has worsened her condition. She was later sent to Dhaka,” said Dr Asim Kumar Samaddar from the Sharankhola Upazila Health Complex.

Police are looking for the attacker, OC Kabirul said.
