The shootout took place on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Daudkandi’s Rainagar area around 3am Wednesday, said Detective Branch officer Nasiruddin Mridha.

The man who died in a hail of bullets was identified as 35-year-old Rubayat Hossain Babul, a resident of Kurerpar village in Narsingdi.

OC Mridha said Babul was part of a gang looting trucks and covered vans on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway.

Being tipped off, a joint team of district and local DB police, led by Cumilla Additional SP Sakhawat Hossain, conducted a drive in Rainagar area where the gang was preparing for a robbery, Mridha said.

As soon as the team arrived in front of Rainagar Palli Bidyut office, the robbers opened fire on them prompting the police to retaliate. Babul was found dead while the other gang members fled,” he said.

Police have arrested another gang member and seized weapons from the spot.

At least four police personnel, including Inspector Nurul Islam of Daudkandi Police Station, have been injured during the raid.
