Lakshmipur court jails 14 for life for robbery, murder

A Lakshmipur court has sentenced 14 people to life in prison for killing a college student in Sadar Upazila while committing a robbery about six years ago.

Lakshmipur Additional District and Sessions Judge Nazmul Huda Talukder announced the verdict on Wednesday.

Among the convicts, five were present in court and nine were tried in absentia.

The convicts have also been fined Tk 20,000 each and will have to spend an additional one year behind bars if they fail to pay the amount within the specified period.

In 2011, a robbery gang stormed the house of Kartik Paul in Kajir Dighirpar area under Uttar Hamchadi Union in Sadar Upazila.

The robbers opened fire on college student Dipta Paul, son of Kartik, leaving him dead on the spot.

Dipta’s uncle Sanjay Paul also suffered bullet wounds, said Abul Kalam, assistant public prosecutor of Lakshmipur Judge’s Court.

A day later, Kartik filed a murder and robbery case against 14 people with Sadar Police Station. 

Police pressed charges in April 2013 against the accused.
