The shootout took place in Akhaura Upazila around 3am on Tuesday, according to Mosharraf Hossain, chief of the local police station.

The man was identified as 30-year-old Khokon Sutradhar, a resident of the district’s Bijoynagar neighbourhood.

A mob captured the man and handed him over to police on Monday after he allegedly stabbed a private company employee to snatch Tk 18 million from him, OC Hossain said.

On the basis of Khokon’s statement, police conducted an operation to nab his accomplices, he said.

“As soon as the team reached Upazila’s Rail Gate area, the gunmen opened fire on them prompting the police to retaliate. Khokon was shot in the gunfight.”

He was rushed to hospital, where the doctors declared him dead, the OC said.

Khokon was named in another case for mugging Tk 14 million, Hossain said.

A shotgun, ammunitions and a machete were recovered from the scene.
