On Sunday, Ilias Hossain, 32, arrived at Prof Biswajit Ghosh's room at Dhaka University with Tk 900,000 and told him that there was a gift for him in the bag.

"The boy put the bag on my table. I saw it was full of money. When I tried to catch him, he ran away. Then the students in the Arts Bulidng detained him. I took him to the dean's office. Police took him from there," Prof Ghosh told bdnews24.com.

Prof Ghosh teaches at the Department of Bangla at Dhaka University and was appointed VC of the new university last June. The permanent campus of the university is being built in Sirajganj's Shahajadpur and it is currently operating from a liaison office in Dhanmondi.

Ilias is from Sujanagar Upazila in Pabna and studied in Kushtia Islami University.

Deputy Director of the university Md Golam Sarwar told bdnews24.com Ilias applied for three posts responding to the recent advertisement in February. "Since then he has been bothering VC for the job."

He tried to meet the vice-chancellor earlier and texted him, Sarwar said. "All those SMS have been given to the police."

"When the VC ignored his call, he (Ilias) established a rapport with his diver and started to follow the VC," Sarwar added.

Roushan Alam, public relations officer of Rabindra University, said Ilias had rented a flat to follow the VC.

Shahbagh Police Station Inspector Zafar Ali Biswas told bdnews24.com, "A man has been taken to custody for offering bribe to Rabidra University vice-chancellor." But no case has been filed yet.
