17 killed in road, train crashes in Bangladesh

At least 17 people have been killed and 35 others injured in road and train accidents in six districts of Bangladesh.

In Naogaon’s Porsha Upazila, a bus hit an autorickshaw, killing four people and injuring three others on Sunday afternoon, Porsha Police Station OC Rafiqul Islam said.

A truck ran over and killed a passerby in Patnitala Upazila of the district in the morning, said Patnitala Police Station OC Mazharul Islam.

At least four people were killed and 26 others injured in a train accident in Gazipur’s Tongi.

The accident occurred when three rear compartments of Dhaka-bound Jamalpur Commuter changed tracks, possibly due to switching of track points, officials said.   

The victims were mostly travelling on the rooftop of the train, police said.

Four people were killed in two road crashes in Kishoreganj.

An autorickshaw collided head-on with a tractor in Kuliarchar Upazila of the district in the afternoon, leaving the driver of the autorickshaw and two of its passengers dead.

Another passenger was also injured in the accident, Kuliarchar Police Station OC Md Nannu Molla said.

A 6-year-old girl fell off a motorcycle before being run over and killed by a bus at Baratia intersection in the district around 12:30pm, Pakundia Police Station OC Azharul Islam said. Her parents were also injured, the OC said.

A young motorcycle rider was killed and another injured when the motorbike collided with a car in Chittagong’s Fatikchharhi in the afternoon, police said.

A similar accident in Magura’s Sadar Upazila claimed the life of a motorcycle rider at Icchakhada area around 5:30pm, according to police.

In Kushtia’s Porhadaha, two schoolboys were killed when a train rammed their motorcycle at a level-crossing, Porhadaha Railway Police Station SI Abul Hossain Khandaker said.

Porhadaha Railway Station Master Shariful Islam said the two boys were trying to cross the tracks though the barrier was in place.
