Two schoolboys riding a motorcycle have been killed in a train accident at a level crossing in Kushtia’s Mirpur Upazila.
The accident occurred at the Poradaha Railway Junction level crossing around 11:45am on Sunday, said Poradaha Railway Police Station SI Abul Hashem Khan Khandker.
The dead have been identified as Ailchara Secondary School students Ayatullah, an eighth grader, and Mubin, a student in ninth grade.
The engine of the 506 shuttle train from Daulatdia Port to Poradaha was being turned around this afternoon, said Poradaha Station Master Shariful Islam. Though the gate for the level crossing was closed, the schoolboys went around it and attempted to cross.
The motorcycle was struck by the train, killing one of the riders on the spot. The other later died in hospital.
The accident occurred because the two had attempted to make the crossing despite the gate being closed, SI Abul said.
The bodies have been sent to the Kushtia Sadar morgue.
