Mother held for burning her nine-year-old son to death in Narayanganj

A mother was arrested for allegedly killing her nine-year-old son by setting him on fire in Araihazar Upazila in Narayanganj on Friday morning.

The arrestee is Shefali Begum, a resident of Baroipara village in Uchitpur Union, and wife of Anowar Hossain, a Bangladeshi migrant worker based in Oman.

Receiving information from local people, police went to Shefali’s house and recovered the burnt body of her elder son Hridoy, police said. In the same incident, her younger son Jihad, 7, also suffered burn injuries. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

“Shefali confessed that she torched the bed while her two sons were sleeping,” said Inspector MA Haque, officer-in-charge of Araihazar Police Station.

“She has an extramarital affair with a local man named Momen. Her sons came to know the matter. Since then, she planned to kill them.”

Police are looking for Momen who remained absconding since the incident.
