Reckless bus driving in Dhaka sees Titumir College student lose hand

A student of Dhaka’s Government Titumir College has lost his right hand when the driver of the bus he was travelling on tried to make his way through traffic in the capital’s Karwan Bazar.

Rajib Hossain, 22, who works as a part-time computer typist, was on his way to the college in Mohakhali from his Jatrabarhi home when the accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

He was admitted to Samorita Hospital. Doctor Reaz Ahmed told bdnews24.com Rajib’s right hand was cut off from the elbow.

“We are giving him blood. He is in a stable condition now,” the physician told bdnews24.com in the evening.

Traffic Police Inspector Anwar Kabir, who was near the site of the accident when it happened, told bdnews24.com a BRTC double-decker bus stopped at the SAARC Fountain signal beside Panthakunja around 1:30pm.

“A bus of Swajan Paribahan tried to make its way through the vehicles at the signal. One if its passenger’s hand was cut off as the bus got very close to the double-decker. The severed hand was hanging from the double-decker,” the inspector said.

Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Aftab Ali said the driver of the Swajan Paribahan bus fled the scene.

Police arrested the driver of the double-decker and seized both vehicles, Aftab said.

Jahidul Islam, a maternal uncle of Rajib, told bdnews24com Rajib lost his parents a few years ago.

The college student, eldest among three brothers, also foots the bill of his two younger brothers’ education with the money he gets from the part-time job, Jahidul said.
