The Supreme Court’s Appellate Division will decide on Monday whether to grant appeals against the bail granted by the High Court to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

The state and the Anti-Corruption, or ACC, had filed appeals against the bail.

A four-member appellate bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain held the hearing on the bail petitions on Sunday.

ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan started the arguments, followed by Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Khaleda’s lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali.

Security around the court has been heightened. Thorough searches are being conducted on everyone entering the premises.

Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case by a special trial court on Feb 8. She was taken to jail immediately after the verdict was announced.

High Court judges granted a four-month interim bail to Khaleda Zia on Mar 12.

The state and the ACC sought to appeal the bail decision before the Supreme Court on Mar 14. The bail was stayed until Sunday for the state and the ACC to open formal appeals.
