The arrested person, Apan Dulal Mali, 42, is an orderly of the Katirhat High School in Hathazari.

The 8-year-old girl, a student of Katirhat Government Primary School, was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital with several wounds after she was found in the septic tank of the institution on Sunday afternoon.

Her uncle told bdnews24.com that she took food for her brother to the high school near her primary school with one of her classmates in the afternoon.

Dulal took the girl to the first floor of the high school and asked her classmate to leave, he said.

When she did not return home, the teachers and her father went to the high school to search her.

They heard the girl moaning from the septic tank of the school and rescued her after removing the cover.

“Dulal hit my niece with a knife and a heavy object on her forehead and ear before pushing her into the tank,” the girl’s uncle said.

The girl was first taken to Hathazari Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to the CMCH.

CMCH police camp Assistant Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukder said the girl suffered injuries in several parts of her body, including head and neck.

Hathazari Police Station OC Belal Uddin said the locals caught Dulal and handed him over to the police.

“He has confessed to raping the girl in primary interrogation. We are conducting necessary medical tests for confirmation,” the OC said.
