Party leaders and activists joined the discussion organised on Saturday with Denmark Awami League’s president Iqbal Hossain Mithu in the chair.

Organising Secretary of All European Awami League Dr Bidduth Barua was the main speaker of the discussion. He discussed on the speech and termed it “an epic”.

“The historic speech gives courage to the people who face oppression across the world,” he said.

Bangladesh observed the day this year with renewed pride as UNESCO has recognised the 1971 speech as part of world history.

UNESCO has added Bangabandhu’s speech to the Memory of the World Register, recognising its importance as part of the world’s ‘documentary heritage’.

On this day in 1971, the Father of the Nation delivered an earth-shattering speech at Dhaka’s Suhrawardy Udyan (formerly known as Race Course ground) declaring the War of Liberation against Pakistan.

Eighteen days later, the Pakistani military began its operation killing thousands of unarmed people, and after a bloody war for nine months Bangladesh achieved independence.

Pakistani army surrendered at the Suhrawardy Udyan on Dec 16, 1971.

Among others, Jahangir Alam, Motaleb Hossain, Hillol Barua, Mohammad Yusuf, Ahsanuzzaman, Fahmid Al Mahid, and Iftekhar Samrat spoke at the discussion.
