The student was identified as nine-year-old Sanjida Begum, a third-grader at the local Intervita School. She did not know how to swim, her uncle Md Farid Mia said.

Sanjida’s parents work at a local garment factory owned by Halim Group. They went to work on Saturday morning leaving her alone at home, Farid told bdnews24.com.

Sanjida, daughter of Parvez Bepari, went bathing with her neighbour Sajid. Sajid left her and returned home as she was washing clothes on the river pier.

Her parents began searching for her after returning from work and reported her missing to the Kaliganj fire service.

Kaliganj Fire Station chief Abdul Sattar Molla said they had to contact the Tongi Fire Station because theirs did not have a diving squad.

The Tongi diving squad found Sanjida’s body around 10:30pm, he said.
