Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal announced the programmes of the Genocide Day and the Independence Day to the media after emerging from a meeting with the law enforcement agencies at the Secretariat on Sunday.

There will be light out for a minute from 9:00pm to 9:01pm on Mar 25 across the country except for emergency services.

“The government will not switch off the electricity centrally but the people will do so at 9pm to observe the symbolic blackout,” Asaduzzaman said in reply to a question.

A formal letter, including the request of implementing the government plan to observe the occasion and disconnect the power connection, has been sent to all ministries and divisional offices.

Overall security measures during March 26 were discussed at the meeting.

On Mar 25, 1971, the Pakistan military attacked unarmed people of the then East Pakistan especially targeting the students and pro-liberation intellectuals in ‘Operation Searchlight’.

Bangladesh is demanding that the UN should declare the day as 'genocide day'.
