Fariz Rzayev, deputy head of the Secretariat of First Vice-President Azerbaijan, met Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali on Sunday at his office and sought the support, the foreign ministry said.

He also presented the oil-rich Muslim majority country’s proposal to be a host of the world expo.

Bangladesh is one of the 170 countries that form the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) which organises the World Expo, one in five years.

Besides Azerbaijan, Japan, Russia and France are the other countries competing for the Expo. France earlier sent its special envoy Pascal Lamy and sought Bangladesh’s support.

World Expo, known officially as International Registered Exhibitions, is organised every five years. They can last up to six months, and international participants can build their own pavilions on the Expo site.

The themes of World Expos are designed to raise awareness of and find responses to universal challenges of our time.

The most recent World Expo was held in the city of Milan, Italy, in 2015, under the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”.

The next World Expo will take place in Dubai (UAE) between Oct 20, 2020, and Apr 10, 2021, under the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”.

The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), which has 170 members including Bangladesh would decide on the next venue of the Expo 2025 by mid-November. Each member countries have one vote.

Fariz Rzayev also invited the foreign minister to attend the conference of the non-align movement in Baku on Apr 5 and 6.
