Fire services were called in immediately to rescue people from the debris.

The building was being torn down when parts of the wall collapsed on the street, residents said.

The incident occurred on Harnath Ghoshal Road near Royal Hotel around 10pm on Saturday, a Fire Service official told bdnews24.com.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Kamal Hossain said a part of the wall collapsed on a taxicab and a rickshaw on the street, injuring the driver of the cab and the rickshaw-puller.

He said the two were sent to hospital.

Kazi Bablu, a resident of the neighbourhood, said the demolition works of an old two-storey building was going on for weeks.

Only the wall along the street was left to be torn down when the accident occurred, he said.

“We were on the street when we heard the crashing sound. Then we saw the wall collapsed on the street, burying a taxicab and a rickshaw,” Bablu said.

“We rushed and rescued to people. They have been sent to hospital,” he added.
