Both the victims, who lived in Manik Bhandar Village in Gazipur Union, were taken to the Habiganj Sadar Modern Hospital early Saturday.

Hospital duty doctor Debashish Ray said that a girl was admitted to the hospital after her alleged rape.

"Though there were signs of injury on her body; whether or not she was raped would be discovered after tests," he said.

The girl’s mother was also admitted to the hospital, he said.

Police, however, said that the victims were beaten up but not raped.

“The girl’s family was involved in a land feud,” said Chunarughat Police Station OC Azimuzzaman. “Though they were beaten, no incident of rape occurred.”

The family said that locals Mizan Mia and Fazul Haque had been harassing the girl for quite some time. They had even made indecent proposals to her several times.

The girl's father was not at home at the time when the group of perpetrators entered the victim's home.

They then tied the girl’s hands and feet and attempted to rape her, according to police.

Her mother heard her screams and rushed in, which led to them beating her and tying her up.

The family said the men then raped the girl while her mother was in the same room and fled afterwards.

Locals rescued them and brought them to Habiganj Sadar Modern Hospital.
