State Minister for Finance MA Mannan was among the passengers.

Train services to the eastern city of Sylhet from the rest of Bangladesh have remained suspended since 1am Friday, said railway official Mujibur Rahman.

No casualties were reported in the accident that took place in front of the Satgaon train station.

The train’s pull rod broke down and fell on “point and crossing” blocks, Rahman said. “As a result, 11 compartments of the train jumped off tracks.”

Two special trains reached the scene around 6am and started rescue work. “It will take quite a while to remove the locomotive and bring normalcy,” said the engineer.

State Minister Mannan was taken to Dhaka by a police car, said Md Ashequl Hoque, acting UNO in Srimangal.
