Rail-links between the eastern city of Sylhet and the rest of Bangladesh were suspended around 1am on Friday when 11 compartments of the train jumped off the tracks after the train’s pull rod broke down and fell on “point and crossing” blocks, said railway engineer Mujibur Rahman.

Rescuers finished clearing the line and taking the damaged compartments to Satgaon Station around 3:45pm, he said.

The repair work on the tracks ended around 4:45pm, he added.

Two special trains reached the scene around 6am and started the rescue work.

No casualties were reported in the accident that took place in front of the Satgaon train station.

State Minister for Finance MA Mannan was among the passengers.

He was taken to Dhaka by a police car, said Md Ashequl Hoque, acting UNO in Srimangal.
