The embassy said the day-long events on Wednesday began with the hoisting of the National Flag at half-mast in the morning by Ambassador Muhammad A Muhith.

This followed a discussion where non-resident Bangladeshis, including political figures, artists, and professionals working with various Danish government and non-government organisations and UN bodies were present along with their family members.

Messages of President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam were also read out.

A documentary on the history of the Language Movement and International Mother Language Day was screened.

The ambassador in his remarks paid homage to the memories of the language martyrs and the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who had steered the language movement from within the confines of the prison cell.

He shed light on the significance of the day, Feb 21, which ultimately ushered the independence of Bangladesh, in the life of Bengali people.

Mentioning the culture and heritage of a nation are deeply rooted in its mother tongue, he underscored the importance of language for the progress and prosperity of any nation.

The Bangladesh Awami League in Copenhagen in a separate statement said they also joined the embassy’s celebration.

Leaders, including their adviser Subash Ghosh and All European Awami League’s Organising Secretary Dr Bidduth Barua also spoke at the discussion.
