The incident was reported on Friday afternoon in the port city’s Panchlaish area.

Police said some suspected muggers, aged between 15 and 20, opened fire fearing arrest at the checkpoint when the law enforcers stopped their two motorcycles.

Around 4pm, Assistant Sub Inspector Abdul Malek signalled the motorbikes to stop at the checkpoint in Sholoshohor.

“As soon as the police approached to frisk them, they shot Malek,” CMP Deputy Commissioner Abdul Warish told bdnews24.com.

Police fired back but no one of the fleeing suspects were injured, he said.

One of the attackers was held but the others escaped leaving the motorbikes behind, he said.

Malek was being treated for gunshot injuries in the leg at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Citing doctors, Warish told bdnews24.com ASI Malek was out of danger.

He identified the arrestee as Mohammad Hakim, 19.

“We have information that some young men of the area carried out the shooting. They opened fire as they feared arrest for carrying a pistol,” Warish said.

Panchlaish Police Station OC Mohiuddin Mahmd said the young men were involved in mugging.

He also said police were conducting drives to arrest the other suspects and seize the pistol.
