BSMMU Pro-VC ASM Zakaria Swapan dies after long battle with cancer

Prof ASM Zakaria Swapan, a Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University or BSMMU, has died.

After a long battle with liver cancer, the 54-year-old breathed his last on Wednesday at the BSMMU Hospital.

He was pronounced dead around 11:45am, BSMMU spokesperson Prasunto Majumder told bdnews24.com. 

A dermatologist, Swapan was in charge of the university’s educational affairs as one of the two pro-VCs.

Born in Mymensingh, he graduated from the Sir Salimullah Medical College in 1988.

Swapan served as the proctor of BSMMU between 2009 and 2015, before being appointed as a pro-VC in 2016.

He was the joint secretary general of the pro-Awami League doctors’ forum, the Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad and had also served as the general secretary of its BSMMU chapter.

The Bangladesh Medical Association or BMA, which Swapan had served as a member of the central body, has expressed condolence over the death.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also expressed her condolences.
