On May 20, 2014, the local Awami League leader was killed in a daylight attack when his convoy was waylaid in the Feni district town.

Armed assailants blocked his car, opened fire on the vehicle and set it ablaze with the chairman trapped inside.

Ekramul’s brother Rezaul Hoque Jasim started the case against Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury, a leader of Feni BNP, and 30/35 unidentified people.

Police pressed charges against 56 people in August the same year. The court indicted them in March 2016 and heard arguments until Jan 28 this year.

A total of 44 arrests were made over the years. Among the arrestees, 15 confessed to court, said Feni Public Prosecutor Hafez Ahmed.

Feni District and Sessions Judge Aminul Hoque heard both sides on Tuesday before setting the date for the verdict.

He cancelled the bail for local Awami League leader Jahangir Adel, Ziaul Alam and 18 others and upheld the bail for four suspects, according to the public prosecutor.

Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury alias Minar Chowdhury and 34 other suspects are behind bars. Five suspects went into hiding after securing bail.

One suspect, Sohel, died in a shootout with RAB, according to the elite police.
