Nigerian national Sabinas Sinedo, 44, was detained on Saturday night from the south-eastern district based on a tip, said Feni Superintendent of Police SM Jahangir Alam Sarkar.

He has been taken in for questioning, Sarkar said.

Retired customs official Jalal Uddin made the acquaintance of Sinedo through an online business, Chagolnaya Police Station OC M Morshed told bdnews24.com.

“Jalal sent Tk 1.5 million to Sinedo’s bank account after he said he would pay him back in dollars and gold. But Sinedo cut off communication after receiving the money. Jalal then complained to the police.”

“Jalal successfully contacted Sinedo a few days ago and invited him to his home. Sinedo was then detained in possession of a significant quantity of counterfeit dollars.”

Police did not state the exact amount of counterfeit currency seized.

With a visa received on Jan 12, the Nigerian national arrived in Bangladesh on Jan 24.

Police have seized the counterfeit currency, his passport, mobile phone and two bags and are preparing to file a case over the matter.
