Detained Maruf Hossain and Billal Hossain are second-year students of political science and Urdu respectively.

The alleged incident occurred on Tuesday midnight when two private firm executives 'Russel' and Abu Bakar Sabuj were passing through the Arts Building area.

'Russel' has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as he was hit on the head by a brick during the mugging attempt.

Maruf is known to be a follower of BCL Surya Sen Hall General Secretary Nahidul Islam Shahin while Billal is a confidant of BCL Bijoy Ekattor Hall President Fakir Russel.

When contacted, BCL leader Shahin declined comment on Maruf, but Fakir Russel said the police and the university administration would take necessary action against Billal.

The proctor's office handed over the two students to Shahbagh Police Station Tuesday night which was confirmed by a police officer who declined to be named.

Witnesses said a man came to a group of students who were playing badminton on the campus and sought help when they became victims of mugging. The students rushed to the scene and caught two muggers red-handed.

Abu Bakar told bdnews24.com, "We were counting the money we raised from selling the company products on the day when 10 to 12 students came and asked what we were doing here. They took around Tk 10,000 from the bag. Russel was hit in the head when he resisted them."

"After a while, most of them left, but Maruf and Billal tried to hit us again with bricks. We screamed for help at the time when a few other students came and detained them," Bakar added.

He confirmed that they had got their money back.
