Suspected killers Md Salahuddin, 28, and Nazrul Islam, 30, have also been arrested and a knife, a machete and an autorickshaw allegedly used in the killing of Md Mofizur Rahman, 40, seized.

Dhaka Additional Superintendent of Police Md Saidur Rahman detailed the police investigation into the case over the Jan 2 recovery of Mofizur’s torso in Keraniganj at a news briefing on Saturday.

Saidur said they had to conduct a DNA test to confirm the identity of Mofizur after his family from Savar failed to identify him with only the torso.

Mofizur’s family had earlier filed a general diary saying he had gone missing and police had called them to identify the body, suspecting it was of Mofizur.

Saidur said Mofizur had a jewellery shop in Savar and used to work as a Kabiraj or village Ayurvedic doctor.

During the investigation, locals in Keraniganj’s Beuta told police that Mofizur used to come to the area to treat a woman.

“The woman confessed to killing Mofizur during interrogation,” Saidur said.

Referring to the woman’s statement, the ASP said Mofizur blackmailed and raped her in the name of treatment.

The woman then contracted Salahuddin and Nazrul of the same area to have Mofizur killed, the police officer said.

When Mofizur went to the woman’s house on Dec 31, she served him sleeping pills mixed in curry, according to the woman’s statement.

“After he slept, they strangled him with scurf. To dispose of the body, they cut it into eight pieces. Nazrul and Salahuddin threw those into different water bodies in the area by using a CNG-run autorickshaw. But the torso swelled and came to the surface,” Saidur said.

The decomposed head was also found after three days, but police were yet to recover the other parts of Mofizur’s body, Saidur said.

Keraniganj Model Police Station OC Shaker Mohammad Zubayer, among other officials, was also present at the briefing.
