Three more die of burns from makeshift fires in Rangpur

Three more people, including two women, have died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital from burns suffered in makeshift fires.

The dead have been identified as Rumki Begum, 27, Geeta Rani, 25, and Maqbool Hossain, 70.

Rani passed away around 7:30am on Friday morning, while Hossain died around 10:30pm on Thursday and Begum died some time later, said RMCH Burn Unit Registrar Towheed Alam Siddik.

Thus far 21 people have died at the hospital in January from burns suffered in makeshift fires while trying to ward off the winter cold. Fifty-two others are currently receiving treatment at the hospital after receiving burns in similar situations.

Temperatures have dropped around the country since the start of the new year. A severe cold wave in Bangladesh’s north-west region resulted in a record low temperature of 2.6 degrees in Panchagarh’s Tetulia on Jan 8.
