The customs interrogated Md Anwar Hossain after he arrived on Monday night on a Singapore Airlines flight, said Mainul Khan, director general of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate or CIID.

“We received a tip-off and kept an eye on him,” he told bdnews24.com.

Customs officers started searching him after he gave inconsistent statements while passing through the green channel, he said.

They found 43 pieces of gold weighing around 4 kg and wrapped in a black cloth inside his underwear.

Anwar travelled between Dhaka and Singapore twice this month. He went abroad five times last year.

He introduced himself as a ‘luggage dealer’ during an interrogation, according to Khan.

One ‘Rezaul’ gave him Tk 50,000 and paid for his ticket to carry the gold, he said quoting Anwar.
