The incident occurred late on Friday night in the Sharishapbari Upazila’s Baira Bazar area.

The man has been identified as Nazim Uddin Sikdar, 58. He worked for the Tangail district administration.

Detective Branch police conducted a raid on a gambling den in the Baira Bazar area that night based on a tip-off, said Jamalpur DB OC Md Salemuzzaman. Twelve were detained during the raid while the other gamblers fled.

“One of the gamblers, Nazim Uddin Sikdar, fell and knocked himself unconscious,” the OC said. “That night he was taken to Jamalpur General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.”

The body was taken to the morgue for autopsy, he said.

But Nazim’s younger brother, Ghatail Upazila Executive Officer’s Office Press Server Abdul Quader claims his brother was tortured to death by DB police.

He called for a transparent investigation into the matter and demanded justice.
