Temperature in Bangladesh’s Tetulia falls to lowest on record

Temperature in Panchagarh’s Tetulia has fallen to 2.6 degrees Celsius, the lowest on record.

In the 24 hours prior to 6am Monday morning, temperature averaged out to the country’s all-time low, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

Temperature in Nilphamari’s Syedpur was second at 2.9 degrees Celsius, while it was 3 degrees Celsius in Dimla, 3.1 degrees Celsius in Kurigram’s Rajarhat and 3.2 in Dinajpur. Temperature in Dhaka dropped to as low as 9.5 degrees Celsius.

The day’s highest temperature was recorded at 25.6 degrees Celsius in Teknaf.

Senior Meteorologist Abdul Mannan told bdnews24.com that the Weather Office records date back to 1948.

The previously record was 2.8 degrees Celsius, which dated back to Feb 4, 1968, he said.

Temperature in Syedpur had fallen to 3 degrees Celsius back in Jan 11, 2013, but it has not dipped below 3 degrees Celsius in recent years.

A cold wave has been sweeping across six divisions of Bangladesh since Jan 4. Though it began as a light cold wave (8-10 degrees Celsius), it soon developed into a medium cold wave (6-8 degrees Celsius). On Saturday, Rajshahi and Chuadanga reported temperature below 6 degrees Celsius.

The weather office considers temperatures from 4-6 degree Celsius to be a severe cold wave. Rajshahi, Pabna, Dinajpur and Kushtia are currently experiencing severe cold waves.

Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barisal, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Khulna Divisions and parts of Srimangal and Sitakunda are currently experiencing light to medium cold waves.

Night and day temperatures across the country should remain largely unchanged on Monday, Rahman told bdnews24.com. There may be a slight change in the next 48 hours and night temperatures may rise later on in the week.

Fog is an everyday occurrence from midnight to morning in winter. But, according to Monday’s weather bulletin, it may linger into the afternoon in parts of the country.

The cold wave has disrupted the lives of many in northern Bangladesh.
