Ready to challenge hike in power price in court, says CAB

The Consumers Association of Bangladesh, or CAB, says it will take legal action against the hike in the price of electricity if the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission does not reverse the decision in 10 days.

CAB also called for a reduction in the ‘unfair and unreasonable’ expenditure in power generation, transmission and distribution and for a tariff on importing electricity.

The BERC ignored public opinion and the proposal to reduce the cost of electricity at the public hearing, CAB President Ghulam Rahman said.

“I call upon the government and the BERC to dismiss the price hike immediately and instead reduce the cost according to the CAB proposal,” said the retired bureaucrat, who had headed the BERC between September 2007 and June 2009.

“If the government does not do so within 8-10 days we will take legal action to protect the rights of consumers.”

The energy regulator hiked electricity prices by 5.3 percent or Tk 0.35 a unit, effective from December.

It was the eighth increase in the price since the Awami League government came to power nine years ago.
