Former MP Yusuf hospitalised following Hasina’s orders

The authorities have admitted former MP Mohammad Yusuf to Chittagong Medical College Hospital following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s orders to treat the freedom fighter.

Yusuf, 67, a former MP from Chittagong-7, was taken to the hospital on Sunday afternoon following Hasina’s instructions earlier in the day.

He was staying in his brother’s home in Rangunia in a miserable state.

Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told bdnews24.com Hasina ordered that Yusuf be treated after the news of his condition drew huge attention on the social media in past few days.

Yusuf’s brother Mohammad Sekandar said the former MP was kept at the intensive care unit of the hospital.

CMCH Director Brig Gen Md Jalal Uddin told bdnews24.com that Yusuf had suffered a stroke.

“He is unconscious and suffering from septicaemia,” he added.

CMCH medicine department head physician Ashok Kumar Dutta is supervising Yusuf’s treatment.

Yusuf, a leader of the Communist Party of Bangladesh or CPB, defeated hanged war criminal and BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury’s brother NDP candidate Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury in the 1991 elections with the Awami League-led coalition’s ‘boat’ symbol.

He later joined the Awami League.

He started his career in politics by joining Chhatra Union when he was a student of Rangunia College. 

The freedom fighter continued his involvement with leftist politics after joining Karnaphuli Jute Mill as a clerk.

Yusuf, who devoted himself to the welfare of the working class, remained unmarried.

His brother Sekandar runs a tea stall in Rangunia.

Yusuf has been staying at Sekandar’s home since he lost the ability to move due to brain haemorrhage in 2001. He has been suffering also from heart diseases since 2007.

Sekandar and his family called the journalists for drawing the government’s attention to the issue after Yusuf’s condition deteriorated last week.
