The family of Rafiqul Hasan Rimon, 42, filed a general diary with New Market Police on Saturday, claiming he had gone missing.

Police recovered the body around 11:30pm on Sunday night, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station OC Ganesh Gopal Biswas told bdnews24.com on Monday.

The family say Rimon’s divorce from his wife Kaniz Fatema was at the final stage.

Kaniz told bdnews24.com that she had been living with her parents in Science Laboratory area for the last eight months and Rimon in his sister’s in Uttara.

“The talks about the divorce over family disputes were under way. Rimon was preparing for it, but I had not got the papers,” Kaniz said.

She also said Rimon had a dispute over the ownership of one of his two flats in Agargaon with one Sajedul Karim Rony.

A case was also started over the ownership of the flat, occupied by Rony, Kaniz said.

“Maybe Rony set some woman on Rimon to get some facilities. The murderer must be tried,” she said.

Police officers investigating Rimon’s death said the dispute between Rimon and Kaniz had originated from his love affair with one of his cousins.

That cousin is the last person Rimon talked on his phone, which was found next to the  body, police said.

They have also taken Rony into custody for questioning.

On Saturday, Rimon brought his children, one 10 years old and the other four and a half years, to his in-laws’ house.

He left them there, saying he would take a short trip to Dhanmondi. The family did not hear from him again.

On Sunday night, police received a call claiming a body was lying at a construction site in Shukrabad. Two friends later identified the man as Rimon.

Rimon was last seen on a CCTV camera near Shukrabad’s Metro Shopping Mall, said New Market Police Station Inspector (Operations) Abdus Salam.

Rimon’s father Khalilullah, a retired school teacher, suspects Kaniz’s family is behind the death of his son.

“They had been threatening my son for a long time. Police must investigate whether Kaniz’s family carried out the murder with Rony’s help secretly,” he told bdnews24.com.

Khalilullah said only the legal process was to be completed for the divorce and Rimon had already paid the ‘Denmohar’ or dower he had promised to give Kaniz during the marriage.

He said Rimon had been living in Dhaka for past six months after resigning as a captain of a ship to handle these issues.
