Funeral prayers for Sayedul Hoque at parliament; Hamid, Hasina pay respects

Funeral prayers for Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque have been held on the premises of the National Parliament.

President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Speaker of the Parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury placed wreaths on Hoque’s coffin on Sunday.

Hoque died on Saturday morning while undergoing treatment at Dhaka’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University hospital. He was 75.

He was put on life support on Dec 13 after his admission to the hospital due to a prostate gland infection.

The Hasina-led government appointed Hoque as fisheries minister in 2014 following the tenth parliamentary elections.

After paying her respects as prime minister, Hasina laid flowers on the former minister’s coffin as the president of the Awami League.

Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah paid his respects to Hoque, followed by Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury on behalf of the Awami League, and Opposition Whip Nurul Islam Omar on behalf of the opposition in parliament.

Following the service, Hoque’s body will be taken to his constituency of Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar, which elected him to parliament five times.

The final funeral service will be held in Nasirnagar before his burial in his birthplace, the family said.
